SPEAKER 1
Today, the President and Vice President of the United States met with the President of Ukraine in the Oval Office. The American leaders committed five very fundamental errors. There were five big failures today, and I wanted to take this opportunity, while the moment is fresh, to comment on what they are. The first failure was one of hospitality.
0:26
This may seem a little old fashioned to me, but I think it's important. When someone travels to your house, you're supposed to be hospitable to them. You're supposed to be gentle and generous and providing. And if that's somebody who traveled to your house is coming from a country at war,
0:46
if they had to take a night train because there are no planes or helicopters, if it took them days to reach you because of all these difficulties, That's all the more reason to be hospitable. And in yelling and interrupting, we were inhospitable today. Second failure is one of decency.

Five Failures in the Oval Office (video)

America hurt itself badly today.

In this, my first substack video, I react to the shameful encounter between American leaders and media and the Ukrainian president. No doubt there were more, but I saw five failures on our side: of hospitality, decency, democracy, strategy, and independence. Please watch and share.

If you are thinking today about how to help Ukrainians, here are some possibilities: Come Back Alive (Ukrainian NGO that supports soldiers on the battlefield and veterans), United 24 (the Ukrainian state platform for donations, with many excellent projects), RAZOM (an American NGO, tax-deductible for US citizens, which cooperates with Ukrainian NGOS to support civilians), and Documenting Ukraine (a project that helps to give Ukrainians a voice, also tax-deductible for Americans).

Discussion about this video

I am seething with rage. 😡 As the granddaughter of a veteran who fought at Normandy on D-Day, I am so deeply ashamed that this POS has disgraced the memories of those we lost and every American alive today and our freedom fighters here and abroad with this disgusting act of propaganda engineered to hide the weakness of an American president and his inability to govern. It’s unforgivable. Everyone, donate what you can to United24 and give to the Ukrainian cause, then find a protest and stand with Ukraine! 🇺🇦

Yes! And to think that this year we will commemorate the end of WWII in Europe...I don't see how Trump can show his face. He has deeply damaged us at home and around the world. That would have been an event where we could have been acknowledged and appreciated as good guys and strengthen our current alliances. Trump has trashed all that.

You've expressed so well the deep, deep shame and disgust we all feel regarding Trump's and Vance's despicable, shameful behavior, and toward a legitimate world leader. Ukraine was viciously and wantonly attacked unprovoked by Russia. Do T and V have absolutely no humanity in their hearts and souls toward a country whose children, women, grandparents, etc. were savagely attacked and murdered by Russia. Who are these demons????

Tell me where WE who find so much pain in this moment for Ukrainians can give to a fund that shows WE stand with them. I would like a "go fund me" type place that shows our particular revulsion of what happened in OUR OVAL office with thuggish trump/vance. It would be our chance to show our RESISTANCE now and always for countries that are invaded to be dominated by dictators.

I just started crying because deep down my anger is really fear of feeling the grief of the death of an amazing idea, 250 years old, that allowed us self-rule. Though never perfect, it held out hope that one day.....

I cannot think of this grief again because I must use every day to RESIST with "blood, sweat and tears" until my death.

Expand full comment

Keep an image of the final days of Mussolini in your mind.

Expand full comment

Yes, but the fact that it took such a long, long time, and a more than a million deaths, does not console me.

Expand full comment

Nothing will. But some of the most evil men end badly. Hitler died miserably in a bunker and his generals wanted to kill him. At this point I feel I have a tiny fist waving in the air. But King Farouk of Egypt, in exile in Italy I believe, ate himself to death. Maybe that will be more accurate.

Expand full comment

80,000,000 people died by the time Hitler committed suicide. That's no consolation. (And his generals failed.)

Expand full comment

There is of course little consolation. I know the generals failed. But there is a bit of consolation that these evil people eventually die. If there were no end to it ever ( and it is often that way or it seems that way) there would be no point in going on, yet people like Vaclev Havel, George Washington, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King persisted. Perhaps our species is irredeemable. Then nothing can be accomplished.

Expand full comment

You are so right about the heroes who "never gave up". (That's H.H. the Dalai Lama's motto, BTW. He's another great hero.) You got me thinking: at least, generally, not all of the monsters are alive in all of the places at the same time. That's a good thing. (I'm related to von Stauffenberg, one of the generals who left the bomb to kill Hitler. As you know, it tragically failed.)

Expand full comment

I am wondering where are generals are now. I’m also wondering if this dangerous buffoon will collapse like the Hindenburg or something is afoot.

Expand full comment

"Our" generals? Well, we know that the decimation has begun. I believe that the military will become the orange sadist's weapon to be used against us. Unfortunately I can never think of the orange sadist as a buffoon. He's far too dangerous for any word that has a connotation of humor.

Here's an idea.

This Tues he'll be speaking to the joint session of Congress and there will be millions and millions of people watching. Dems can do civil disobedience. After each lie, one by one, they can stand up and turn their backs to him. Soon, many will be standing and can shout "Stop the Steal" or sing the national anthem... They can hold the floor and interrupt the coronation just like he tried to do on J6. He will be shamed and we know he'll respond badly, despicably.

He will be exposed as the weak pitiful man he is and his party will also be rebuked.

Who can initiate this action? Bernie? AOC? Murphy? Crockett?

Certainly not Schumer or Jeffries who should get the hell out of the way and let the strong people take the lead. If Dems sit meekly by, then capitulation will be complete in the eyes of the world and Dems will have abandoned us again.

Sorry for cross-posting but wanted to reply to your suggestion, Anne. First, I love it! Symbolic gestures DO matter! Let's keep the creative ideas coming, and people will act on the best of them. In that spirit, I suggested the following to Senator Schumer (one of my senators) and a similar one to my NY Representative. I would love to hear people’s thoughts about it! And we certainly don't need to wait to wait for this or that leader, as you say, but some leadership is needed!

Senator Schumer,

With our federal laws and even our Constitution being violated by a rogue President, now is the time for you and your fellow Democrats and Independents (and any Republicans who have the courage) to lead in the resistance. We need a strong statement, one that is symbolic, impactful, AND feasible.

So here is my suggestion: a Liberty Torch relay to Washington, D.C. that passes through villages, towns, cities, and suburbs on its way to D.C. via state capitals, with perhaps a scheduled "arrival" in D.C. on July 4th. There would be a statement on the torch reaffirming commitment to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States, and then there would be a digital mechanism, perhaps using blockchain technology, for Americans to electronically sign their name to that statement. This would enable Americans to sign onto the statement without having to physically attend the relay. And the torch would be not one torch but 435 torches that start in the Congressional districts and make their way to their state capital. If blockchain is used, then with each signature, the blockchain gets longer. As these torches are relayed there would be opportunities for ceremonies to receive and pass on the torch, with marches and caravans along the way.

From each state capital, a caravan of that state's torches would then drive to Washington D.C. An "app" could be set up to enable Americans to track the relay of the torches along with signatures as they came in. PSAs and local and national media would track the spectacle. There would then be a grand Constitutional lighting ceremony in Washington D.C. attended by Congressional and civil leaders to receive the 435 torches where they would be displayed. Each Senator and House Representative, Supreme Court Justice, and the President would then be called on to reaffirm their commitment, per their oath of office, to support and defend the Constitution of the United States by signing a federal version of the torch.

A nonresponse to these historically unprecedented attacks on our Constitution and underlying democratic norms would reinforce these attacks by implicitly accepting them. Our hand is forced. The time for action--to say that this in not normal or acceptable--is now.

Please let me know what you think. I stand ready to help make something like this happen.

Thank you,

Stephan Brown

I agree with you one hundred percent. I have forwarded your suggestion to my Congresswoman and both of my Senators, and I urge every who reads this to do the same.

Thanks for sending it on. If everyone sent it to 5 people...

Especially after today's fiasco, the Dems are obligated to take a public stand to rebuke them and stand for decency.

If the Dems do stop the joint session, do you think they can be forced to stop once they start? I dont think so.

Expand full comment

I like this idea. I had an idea the other day regarding the 12 year old at the press podium saying they would pick and choose news outlets; what if no one showed up? Effectively a news media boycott. The admin would wither without the media reporting, especially president Cartman. just a thought

Expand full comment

Yes, another good idea! What legacy news outlet would have the guts to do that?

Expand full comment

Thanks to the people who like my idea. Consequently it was shot down by Peter Baker on "The Weekend" last Sunday. He said getting all the press to do that would be like herding cats. Even if it did happen all the seats would be refilled by supporters, just like they do at rallies. Oh well.

Now, I had another idea: I am always speaking to the TV when I see good information on, for instance, MSNBC; I am saying "The information you are putting out is like speaking to the choir. These pieces need to be on FOX, etc.

Apparently that cannot or will not be done.

So, the idea is to make a list of all the twitter (or FB) handles of Pulican Senators and Congressional reps. Then take the links from these great Substack pieces and post them on the sites of the people on the list. That way there would be good information in all these feeds that maybe, maybe, might be read. In order to add more of the handles to each post, saving time, one could use one of the shortening services on the links: Tinyurl, Bitly, Short.io, Rebrandly, or Dub. Might work, might not? What say you Peter? ;-)))))))))))

Thanks Joel.

Stunned that these two men are Americans, parroting Russian talking points, unaware of where they sit and the legacy of that office, and unaware of the depth of the man at whom they are yelling. Ukrainians understand propaganda. Ukrainians know their history and the past attempts at promises of those who sought only to carve up their country. This is a tipping point. Putin, with a Saudi boost, helped Elon buy Twitter and AI let Elon know how much cash to spend with Zuck, zeroing in those ads and propaganda in those key districts of swing states. When you have enough money to spend, a proven persuasive algorithm, an addictive dopamine platform, combing personalized propagandist, an amplification device, Twitter, a delivery device Facebook newsfeed, to a pre-selected vulnerable persuadable target ( voter), data analyzing scientists, political technologists, it’s not that hard to manipulate an electoral system that was set up in the early 1800’s to protect a slave holding oligarchical class in the developing country.

It’s not rocket science .

They flatter him to convince him he’s succeeded and Trump spends his time in front of screens and mirrors admiring himself, when he is not playing golf. This leaves them free to do whatever they please, destroy US democracy, transfer public money into their accounts, racket, steal, blackmail you name it. And it seems most Americans just watch on, thinking it’s the latest episode of a new fun reality show.

I read that his grand father and his father were members of the mafia. His grand father started investing in brothels when he arrived in the U.S. Then it was real estate. So Trump was brought up in a family where you bought politicians with a prostitute, someone higher up with a flat (apartment). Trump lost a lot of money in the 1980s, the KGB helped him out. He built the Trump Tower and the rich Russian oligarchs invested in luxury flats the money they had stolen in the USSR and later when it collapsed. Trump belongs to the American underworld (to put it nicely). Why did Americans elect such a person? Why can you elect someone without checking his past in the U.S.? Do Americans think that mafiosi are respectable people? Why do Americans tolerate Trump’s pathological lying? Why aren’t Americans frightened by his level of instability, his deep psychological problems? These are some of my numerous questions. I have lived in the U.S., but now I find it is easier to understand how the Russian society works than the American one.

THANK YOU for this video, which I posted to Facebook. Your words were very welcome.

In addition to Trump/Vance's humiliation of American global statesmanship, the public facing meeting we saw was a clear and classic lesson in how our fragile, adolescent leader uses word. We know well his words are never aligned with explaining the "truth" or even an attempt to tell the truth. His words a usually lies when held up to reality. Trump only uses words to further his political agenda. In the case if Ukraine, his agenda is:

1. Publicly belittle Zelensky for Putin's entertainment.

2. Act like he's trying to be a fair and neutral negotiator for the purpose of saving Ukrainian lives. (This is particularly crazy considering the facts)

3. Look to the American public like he's just using "common sense" to settle a spat between two neighbors in a little local fight.

Why does the US need to carry this water?

4. Shift responsibility for giving up Ukraine to Putin by blaming Biden for the war.

5. Demonize Zelensky for not thankfully kowtowing to his eminence HRH Trump for all the support His Royalness has given him (this one is directed at his MAGA base)

Any reasonable person, living in the reality of Ukraine's current situation, know that everything Trump/Vance spewed at Zelensky was lies and propaganda. His purpose is to abandon Ukraine for Russia.

IMO, the reason is simple, Trump can grift much richer personal deals out of Putin than Zelensky.

As an American and a supporter of democracy and the rule of law, I share the shame uniformly expressed below. It was revolting. I wonder, though, whether President Zelensky didn't get a few tactical wins from this embarrassing display by Trump, Vance (and Rubio in his cowardly silence). I imagine being subjected to this display helps solidify support for Zelensky both at home and throughout the EU and other nations that understand the basics dynamics of the illegal Russian invasion. I makes any deal struck without Ukraine at the table even less tenable than it was before today's infantile outbursts. While Zelensky may not "hold any cards" (what disgraceful framing!), the idiots in the Oval may have inadvertently dealt him a few by further exposing the irrationality (and impetuousness) of the American "policy" and "posture." The problem for Trump isn't that Zelensky hasn't been grateful; but that he is not submissive To Trump. Trump needs to own other men.

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/28/politics/us-intel-russia-china-attempt-recruit-disgruntled-federal-employees/index.html

I have written my political party in Germany to say that Germany and EU countries that are NATO allies should be recruiting these people as consultants, and from our military too. Honestly, while I am an EU and US citizen I am on the side of democracy. Diminishing Trump and the MAGA/Heritage Foundation/Opus Dei/Federalist Society/Christian Nationalists power which Trump is doing in every step, does not necessarily give Putin the power he needs if Europe steps up. They have the money, but not the manpower. Both of those things can change even if not overnight. I am thinking about how much countries got off of Russian gas on a dime when they had to, and urgency could possibly bring about that can do spirit again.

That is what I get from Wertheim, which is that while we can acknowledge that it was not humane what Trump did, we do not expect that from Mr. Transactional anyway. I take comfort in seeing that Russia does not really have much to offer Trump and ultimately he might disappoint them again.

There are a couple of troubling historical precedents for what Trump did to Zelensky today (Feb.28, 2025). As we know from Trump's Art-Of-the-Deal ghost writer, Donald has kept a copy of Mein Kampf on his night table. It may be one of the few books which he actually has read and from which his mind, such as it is, shows permanent signs of having digested. Almost exactly 87 years ago Hitler was busy planning how to enable the 3rd Reich to swallow Austria. He invited the Chancellor of Austria, to visit the Berghof where Hitler and his closest advisors and other criminals were at home for the moment. Chancellor Schnuschnigg paid Hitler the visit on Feb.12, 1938 with the hope, like that of Zelensky, of convincing the Führer to moderate his Nazi rhetorical lies and help instead to calm down the Nazi movement in Austria. Instead, Hitler brutally presented Schushnigg with a dead-set ultimatum which stipulated that Nazi, Seyss-Inquart, would become chief of the Austrian police force. In addition, all imprisoned Nazis were to be released. Hitler was sadistically abusive to the Austrian Chancellor who was forced to sign the ultimatum before leaving Bergtesgaden. Some weeks after returning home Schnussnigg announced that a plebiscite would be held in mid-March. Hitler demanded Schuschnigg's resignation and the appointment of Seyss-Inquart as Chancellor. This second ultimatum, like the previous one, forced obedience from Schuschnigg. On March 12, Schuschnigg was put under house arrest. Does this sound familiar with reference to Zelinsky and where things are heading for him? Unlike Schuschnigg, Zelinsky refused to sign Trump's ultimatum. It now looks as if, in their phone conversations, Trump and Putin agreed on how they intend to divide Ukraine between the two of them: the USA will receive total rights over the rich minerals and other valuable Ukrainian assets; Putin will receive the whole real estate of the country right up to its pre-war borders. The precedents for this "solution" would be the Anschluss of 1938 and the Stalin-Hitler shared land-grab of Poland in 1939. After today's staged, loud-mouthed ultimatum-show, Trump and Vance will be only too happy if Zelensky can be subjected to house arrest and then handed over to Putin for a long stay in the Gulag or an accident because someone left a Kremlin window open or simply, the Pregoshin finale. Putin aims to create a 4th Reich with addition of Ukraine, Moravia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and whatever else is up for grabs. Trump and his boss, Musk, will be happy to transform the USA into a 5th Reich or a 6th Reich, with the inclusion of Canada's 10 provinces, Panama, Mexico, Greenland, Denmark and Finland. Possibly, Trudeau and Zelinsky might even run into each other after Siberia and recall the old days before Donald kicked the (frozen) bucket and Vance sought exile in India.

I suggested the following to Senator Schumer (one of my senators) and a similar one to my NY Representative. I would love to hear people’s thoughts about it!

Here's the good news: As the video of the White House debacle goes viral world-wide, all Americans should be mortified by the churlish and unpardonable behavior of our purported leaders. Just as Zelensky is responsible for representing the Ukrainian people, Trump/Vance are responsible for representing us. I think that today the US is no longer the leader of the free world and our magnificent democracy is hanging by a thread. I wish I could rush off to DC and protest in Lafayette Park in front of the White House on Monday but I can't. I wonder if we need to mourn in some visible way immediately - candles in the windows at night? A torch relay is a great idea but will we still be viable in July?

At least now we can all see that our deepest fears about this administration are accurate, and we need to show the world that this is our country and we are not handing it over to Russia and our citizens will not tolerate the abandonment of Ukraine. The disconnect between the warm breakfast reception for Zelenskyy with Congress and the gangster shakedown screaming in the Oval Office is astonishing. I kept expecting Musk and X to pop out of the fireplace to assist in the ambush.

Hoping the Democrats can come up with some silent reaction to Trump's lies in his address to the Joint Session on Tuesday - maybe covering their ears for every lie, as in Hear No Evil. It would cause a stir and make everyone look at them but not be any kind of interruption.

A Heartfelt Request to Continue Your Vital Work

Dear Professor Snyder,

I’m writing to express my deepest gratitude for your work—and to humbly ask that you continue creating videos whenever possible. Your articles and insights have been a lifeline for me during these disorienting months, offering clarity and moral grounding as I grapple with the grief of witnessing antidemocratic forces erode the country I love. Your voice cuts through the noise, reminding me what we’re fighting for, not just against.

My uncle, a medic, in World War II, risked his life to save soldiers on battlefields where fascism seemed unstoppable. He survived, built a family, and taught me that democracy isn’t a given—it’s something we choose, daily, through courage and vigilance. Your work feels like an extension of that same fight. When I watch your videos, I don’t just hear analysis; I’m reminded of the values he embodied—the ones that still make this country worth saving.

Please know how much your perspective matters, especially now. For those of us who care about freedom and human decency, your words are a compass. If you’re able, I hope you’ll keep sharing your voice through videos. They don’t just inform—they fortify.

With immense respect and gratitude,

Lydia Craigmyle

I very much like this video. Although I feel so much fury I feel like I am walking around in a constant state of tight self restraint, I find the bland, almost emotionless delivery registers with me as restraint and not a lack of emotional investment. If you can do more videos, please do.

Apparently Trump and the Republicans see no harm in Russia proceeding to take over Ukraine, its land, people, army and weapons capacities. The question remains - why ?

A relevant parallel is Hitler. In 1938, the UK tried and failed to appease Hitler. Maybe ordinary Americans will make a stand on this betrayal not only of Ukraine but its Allies.

My beloved wife, a Pole, was always sceptical, about US support. While she would feel vindicated she would be saddened. The fall of the Soviet Union was a great day. Now Trump is opening the doors for Russia again.

Russia invested very wisely in cultivating an alliance with this psychologically weak, man-baby. And American journalism and law enforcement let is proceed unchecked by either public outrage or legally available remedies.
