Thank you for bringing this to our attention, once again. Happy to contribute. Ukraine must win this war The felon in the White House and his cohorts have turned their backs on Ukraine.

I just started a monthly donation, too. I was thinking earlier, what would our grandchildren ask, what we did in this moment of global turmoil, for which a large part of the responsibility (or lack thereof) falls onto the present occupant of the White House. I might add, I had absolutely no trouble using the website. Strange that so many other people are having difficulty.

Joanna, This is a new podcast that might interest you. It is called "Mildly Alarmed." They are talking about European Security. I was referred to it by Fabian Hoffmann who does the Substack Missile Matters, and he discusses weapons systems, particularly looking at what is going on in Europe. This podcast is focusing on Ukraine as well as other European security systems with 4 people who have various expertise and they will have guests.

Timothy Snyder's first United 24 fundraiser "Shahed Hunter" in 2023 raised more than $1,200,000. This new one is almost at $13,000 already, after a day. It's a good thing.

Update: $178,755 since yesterday.

This is another good, but rather surprising, thing - from the Scottish Government.

Supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russia

Published 22 February 2026 10:00

Topic International, Ukraine

Scotland sending fishing nets to repel drones.

More than 280 tonnes of used fishing nets will be sent from Scotland to Ukraine to help the nation defend itself against deadly Russian drone attacks.

The used salmon farm nets had been stored ready for recycling but will now be sent to Ukraine following a request from its government.

Vital infrastructure and strategic locations in Eastern Ukraine will be protected as the nets are draped overhead catching exploding drones.

External Affairs Secretary Angus Robertson said:

“As we approach the fourth anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine the Scottish Government is committed to aiding Ukraine’s defence and this donation demonstrates that our support is unwavering.

“The Ukrainian Minister for the Development of Communities made a direct request for Scotland to supply used fishing nets, which would be repurposed to provide anti-drone netting on public roads in Eastern Ukraine.

“We identified 228 old salmon farm nets, weighing 280 tonnes, sitting in storage awaiting disposal. They work by trapping the drone propellers, stopping them reaching their target.

“Drone attacks are a near daily occurrence. They have been responsible for many deaths and casualties as well as causing huge devastation across Ukraine. This will help counter some of these deadly attacks.”

Background

The Directorate for International Trade and Investment (DITI) has allocated £216,000 to meet some of the costs of shipping 280 tonnes of used nets to Ukraine.

Denmark, Sweden and France have also donated old fishing nets for anti-drone use.

Scottish Government officials are finalising details of the transfer of the nets to Ukraine with the Ministry of Defence.

Thanks for the detailed fishing nets report, Karen. I've been following Scotland's donations from the beginning. I didn't know about Denmark, Sweden and France, so I'm glad to have learned about that, too.

Karen Lewton's avatar

It's brilliant, isn't it!

Joanna Denis's avatar

Yes it is, Karen! Thank you for posting this because I had not known about old fishing nets used to catch drones. How clever is that! Thinking outside the box and into the fishing nets.

Karen Lewton's avatar

I don’t know what the problems are, that people have with the United 24 website, though obviously very frustrating. Maybe worth pointing out that it's a Ukrainian government website, not one personally administered by Timothy Snyder, who can't "fix" any issues. Perhaps donating in fishing nets would be easier!

Joanna Denis's avatar

You gave me a good laugh, Karen. Who knows how these algorithms work. I know it must be very frustrating to the people who truly want to help. I think the very first time I tried to donate, I had some difficulty. They were not yet taking credit cards and you had to do it through an international bank transfer, if I remember correctly. And I may not......remember correctly...

what an amazing partnership among people who value all nations' freedom. Hooray for the Scots, Danes, Swedes and French.

For those experiencing issues with donating:

Timothy Snyder is providing a link to the Sky Defense Project on the United24 website, the official crowdsourcing platform of Ukraine that has been raising funds for military and humanitarian projects since 2022. I used Timothy's link and when I entered my credit card information, a screen immediately appeared from my bank with a notice that I would be receiving a text with a six digit number to authorize the charge. I entered the six digit number sent by my bank and the charge went through. This verification process also occurs for other Ukrainian organizations I support, since they use Ukrainian banks and my bank is verifying the charge. If you're not getting the text, perhaps your bank is blocking what they think is a fraudulent charge so check with your bank or credit card provider.

Just contributed and thank you for supporting Sky Defense!

This project is critical to Ukraine's survival because russia is planning several mass attacks EACH MONTH. A mass attack is defined as more than 400 drones and 20 missiles. The April 16 russian attack included 659 drones and 44 missiles killing 18 Ukrainian civilians and injuring over 100. Lil' putin is angry that after 4 years of war and over 1.3 million russian casualties, he still only occupies 19% of Ukraine. As a result, he's increasing his terror campaign against civilians, including targeting water supply systems to inflict the most severe humanitarian consequences during the summer months. And supplies of U.S. provided Patriot Missiles that can stop russian ballistic missiles have stopped due to use in tRUMP's war against Iran.

Hi Timothy and thanks for this great article. I cannot contribute today, but hope to soon. I am a senior on a fixed budget that is already overstretched with the cost of gas and food. However, I have written to President Zelenskyy and to the Ukrainian Embassy in DC and offerred to help in other ways. Yes, they must win this fight - but then so must the United States.

I spent about twenty years living/working in Russia, Ukraine, and Central Asia. My last trip there was in 2008. I lived in Moscow during the fall of the USSR, the rise of boozy Yeltsin, and the KGB and Putin take over of the banking and the government. Mr. Putin blames the U.S. for the fall of the Soviet Union and has vowed revenge. He entrapped Trump - an easy catch - through flattery, then women, and money. It is all provable. Putin will do whatever necessary to keep Trump in office for one reason - he is internally destroying the United States - our government, our society, our health care systems, our economy, our education, and our relationships with other nations around the world.

The foe in Ukraine and the United States is the same - Mr. Putin. And while the defense of Ukraine is essential, the offense toward Russia and Mr. Putin is equally vital to their future and to democracy worldwide. Germany, England, France, Poland and other nations have pledged to help.

This past week 31 NATO countries met - minus the U.S. - to decide how to move forward without the U.S. and even against the US if needed. Leading this group is now Canada - our neighbor, and prior to Trump our lifelong friend. Since Trump has closed USAID and started a genocide in Africa, Americans are no longer welcome.

If Trump is not defeated in the United States, Ukraine may still receive support from other European nations who fear they may be next on Putin's list to be attacked. But since Trump has alienated our NATO allies and others around the world - no one will come to our rescue but ourselves. I feel that Americans are finally realizing the truth about Donald Trump - a man who is a convicted criminal, but has also committed a long list of other crimes.

IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT ABOUT WHOSE SIDE TRUMP IS ON, Craig Unger recently wrote: "At long last, Putin's lifelong dream of seeing NATO destroyed is within reach. Who knew he simply had to wait until President Trump started a war? (the answer to that is Putin already knew) . . . there is only one winner in this war - Russia. There are less weapons to go to Ukraine, less attention on Ukraine, and Russia has gained new income from the price of gas and oil."

I am a senior but may go to Ukraine and help for one year. I am waiting on an answer. I hope that all other Americans will understand that Trump was "bought" like a cheap suit and is used by Putin to destroy our country. It is called TREASON.

Joanna Denis's avatar

What a fascinating life you have led, and how brave of you to want to help in Ukraine. No doubt Putin’s dreams about the end of NATO and the ongoing implosion of the US from within has made him overjoyed. We cannot give up. I haven’t been receiving my usual mail, several people asked if I got their mail. I asked our postman the other day. He said it isn’t just me, there’s less mail in general. All I can think is, this is the slow destruction of our postal system so voting by mail will be an issue in November. It’s like climbing Mt. Rainer. Just keeping one foot in front of the other, no matter how difficult it becomes, until we succeed in taking back our government.

WAR CRIMES: TS: "Since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has fired wave after wave of missiles, bombs, and drones at Ukrainian civilians and at the structures that allow them to live: their homes, their businesses, their water supply, their energy infrastructure."

I really wish the US would stop, in big ways and small, enabling Putin and his war machine. Letting them sell oil at inflated prices is one awful thing. Starving Ukraine of weaponry is another. Just imagine Pete Hegseth spending well over $1bn/ day to leave us behind where we were under Obama. Yet, here, TS is seeking just $500K and we can have confidence that, unlike with certain others, the money will be spent to its best advantage.

I have tried several times to donate to Sky Defence. Something always goes wrong. I'll keep trying!! Thanks for sending the link. It is a worthy cause.

Mary Ann Kmetyk's avatar

After I enter my credit card information on the United24 website, I receive a message from my bank telling me I will get a text to verify I made the charge, and to enter the six digit number that appears on the text. When I enter the six digit number, the charge goes through. I believe my bank is verifying the charge since a foreign bank is receiving the funds. Other commenters have had this issue and have contacted their bank or credit card provider to authorize the charge.

Same here. Three times. Got a message that "3DS authentication required" but no apparent means of doing that authentication appeared. Oh well.

Timothy,

Thanks for all you are doing to bring awareness of Ukraine’s needs and opportunities to help support them.

Please, keep sharing!

FYI: United24 is not a USA tax-deductible 501(c)(3) organization so contributions to it aren't tax-deductible and can't be made through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). But according to Wikipedia Ukraine House DC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) and can be used as a conduit to channel contributions to United24 and Sky Defense. I just contributed to Ukraine House through my DAF, earmarked for United24 SkyDefense.

Prof. Snyder should mention the tax-deductibility and DAF issues in his column.

As a descendent of Germans from Russia, I have a heart for the Ukrainians and the travesty of the Russian aggression on their country. I would not know where to donate if it wasn't for your writing and your integrity of what you share. May the world turn its eyes back on Ukraine and bring them peace. I am so disgusted at our administration's attitude and Putin-dependence. I just successfully and easily donated this morning, a good way to celebrate Sunday!

Professor, you need to fix your system. Both my cards were erroneously rejected.

Joanna Denis's avatar

I wonder why that is. I had no trouble donating this morning, it went right through.

I am trying to donate but it won't let me go forward after the amount isput in.

Also prevented from donating online. Do you have a customer service number that is available to Americans?

Received an error message:

"Something went wrong

3DS verification is required to finish the transaction."

I emailed the contact for assistance, and await a response.

Mary Ann Kmetyk's avatar

I would contact your bank for assistance. My bank sends me a text to confirm I made the donation along with a six digit code I type in to United24. Then the charge goes through.
