I just contributed. One thing we can do is to write to our Republican Senators explaining that they are Americans first and Republicans second. Therefore, it is their duty to pass the border bill along with the Ukrainian aid that is tied to it. It's dead right now in the House but I doubt that Mike Johnson is strong enough to go up against public opinion if the Senate can amass 60 votes to pass it.

It might be helpful (make some news?) to picket their offices (at least)....

I have contributed numerous times for this item and others on United24. Not to brag, but to show the power we have working together. Sadly, something a small minority of extremists in the House are preventing us from doing on a national scale.

Done. Thank you for this opportunity, Timothy Snyder. We at least individually can show our support for Ukraine while we await congressional action.

Cannot forbear mentioning: if Trump is disqualified by the Supreme Court, resistance to funding Ukraine will collapse. It all comes from Trump, if you use the "but for" test.

Trump still owes Putin for 2016. Trump is not 100% comfortable with stiffing Putin--though reneging on deals is squarely within his skill set. That's why the word has gone out from MAGA headquarters: "Nix Ukraine aid."

There've been people who've had a hard time getting their donations to go through, and I'm one of them. When I donated to the first Safe Skies, the payment went right through without a hitch. I've been trying since your last Safe Skies essay, and it just won't work. I've been checking my cc statement, and it's not listed. I have $450 worth of credit card rewards I'm trying to donate. Something just occurred to me. I usually don't go to bed until around 11:30. Maybe I should try again late tonight, when the system isn't so busy. Will give you a report.

A few weeks ago, I read about the possibility of using impounded Russian funds (up to $300 billion) to supply Ukraine. Is that really a possibility? If so, what are drawbacks?

Dear Professor Snyder, Heartfelt thanks for all you are doing on behalf of this crucially important cause. I gave last year (to RAZOM, too) and already this year to UNITED24 (Via Ukraine House as a QCD) and RAZOM, also as a QCD. Of course I will give more to your part of UNITED24.

But in return for that I have a request. Last fall I attempted to contact the Embassy of Ukraine in DC, both via email and telephone, to ask how I could contribute to the purchase of ammunition or weapons. I never got an answer, and suspect they don't answer inquiries from unknown parties to keep the Muscovite trolls out. Therefore I ask you to please use your contacts to relay my request. I understand that you might be personally reluctant to become involved in weapons acquisition, but Ukraine is running out of ammunition and the US is not going to help them. Please!

I donated earlier this afternoon. Thank you for bringing United24 to our attention. I had been donating to Razom and Doctors Without Borders in the past and still do if I can afford to.

Wonder if future historians will cite this incident as a turning point in USG slide into dysfunction and paralysis?

I also had problems donating. I did one donation in the fall, on a credit card, which went through but have tried several times since then with no luck. I wrote to the "help" or "contact" section of the United 24 site; I think they said the problem might be with my credit card. I called the credit card company to see if they had any restrictions on foreign transactions and they said no, and they also said they had no record of the (unsuccessful) transactions even being attempted. Around this time, I switched internet service providers because my connection was very slow. After getting a much better connection speed I tried again to donate, thinking the low speed might have been the problem, but it still didn't work. I have never done an international bank transfer and I'm not sure I trust that doing so would get the donation where it's intended. Is any receipt sent in connection with doing this by a bank transfer, so that I would know it actually got through?

Is it possible you are using a debit card rather than a credit card? My imperfect memory is reminding me that I had some difficulties at a time when my credit card was being replaced and I was using a debit card for my purchases.

This could be the case. I’ve had debit card donations to U24 declined this year, although not in 2023.

Nope. It's a major card.

Maybe Tim can get to the bottom of it. I really do want to support the critical effort of the Ukrainians and would like to spread the word to grow the effort but until we can figure this out I will hold fire.
