Counter-intuitively to our own long term national policies, Russia appears to be benefiting from Trump's decision to wage war against Iran. Global oil prices are higher and Russia's rake from the increase is estimated to be $150mio / day thus refilling the Kremlin's coffers. And our own supplies of all sorts of war fighting munitions are being rapidly depleted which means that there is less that could go to Ukraine if the Republicans started supporting our ally again.
If only we could predict the actions of what a very sick man, physically, spiritually, mentally would do when put in a position of near complete immunity for any and all crimes. A deranged, demented, psychopathic malignant narcissist. And despite of, or because of his crimes, he was elected twice by the people to lead what was once a great nation.
I accept that he has few guard-rails, but he's also not a deep thinker at the best of times. I'd like more national attention to be drawn to his guiding hands, the ones who know exactly what they are after, and who have found a useful vessel. Names on that list include Miller, Vought, and Vance. Plus, unfortunately, I think an awful lot of his policies are pushed out to the airwaves about 10 minutes after listening to Sean Hannity or Brian Kilmeade on FOX.
Touche! You must read this report that gives chapter, verse and names of the plotters of autocracy behind tRump. It's the product of years of research by a brilliant investigative journalist based in Arizona. It's a long and horrifying read, showing how autocracy would come to the US, using the military as a weapon. Please read, and send to everyone you know.
Trump's dropping sanctions is enriching Russia, as you say, but even more distressing is that Russia is giving intelligence to Iran against our troops. Trump knows this very well. That is the sign of a TRAITOR and should call for immediate impeachment.
Go check out Concis* on Substack, by Shankar Narayan.
Specific to Russia, yes the oil has been a boon to Russia, that's the only way it funds the war. But Europe has started to actually stop Russia's shadow fleet (oil smuggling ships), which matters.
But even more importantly, Ukraine has suddenly turned into the most important security card for the entire Europe/Middle East, and arguably the world. Only Ukraine knows how to wage drone warfare well - instead of the old war fighting of relying on expensive missiles.
Iran bombing the whole region has set up Ukraine to succeed, by forcing countries to get Ukraine's best-in-world drone fighting expertise, and now they're buying contracts with Ukraine for drones (which it can use to pay for its own war).
And there is suddenly a lot of international cooperation and funding and alignment to check Russia and other threats. It is truly breathtaking, and honestly heartening to see countries take fast decisive action against the threats of our time.
*Concis writes about exactly this kind of big picture security maneuvering, who is pulling the strings, who benefits, who reacts, and the underlying geopolitical dynamics under the headlines. I've learned so much from him and suddenly understand the news so much better. There is huge global change afoot.
Kit, I’m immunocompromised, almost 74. I can’t attend, but I protest with yard signs. I live in a very red district in North Texas. You never know who you might impact by a simple sign, in the yard, or in a window. I literally had a Hispanic Fed-Ex driver thank me for my, Protect Democracy sign, and one that includes the dates of WWII, September 11th and January 6.
I alas am now in a retirement community in a condo. Signs are not permitted here but I commend you for putting one up in Texas. Believe me, I make my opinions known but cannot install a sign.
Like you, Kit, my location limits me -- here in the mountains of Kyushu, Japan.
Like you, too, I appreciate your making your opinions known even if from your limited location. And I think we both appreciate Timothy's good intention while speaking at his rally "to ask people to introduce themselves to those around them."
I also cannot do protests. But there are many actions I can take from a chair or bed. Join your local indivisible or 50501 and ask how you can help behind the scenes. There's a lot we physically drained folks can do. And honestly... the DOING is more important than the protesting.
Protest changes atmosphere, builds coalitions, affirms freedom. But protest alone doesn’t stop authoritarian consolidation when the regime controls emergency powers machinery. Minnesota proved neighboring works: local officials refusing ICE compliance, communities protecting each other. That scales.
March 28th matters. So does what happens after: governors refusing emergency powers, judges blocking unlawful orders, state-level resistance that makes federal authoritarian tools unusable.
Protest builds the coalition.
Refusal at friction points breaks the mechanism.
The war’s designed to provide permanent emergency justification. When self-terrorism provides pretext for expanded powers, the test isn’t protest size, it’s whether enough positioned officials say no.
Pattern visible, preparation operational.
March 28th is the visible coalition. The invisible work is officials preparing to refuse compliance.
I live in Rome, Italy. Unfortunately the only Democrats Abroad No Kings (they're calling it No Tyrants) events seem to be in the north, in Venice and Milan. Apparently DA couldn't obtain a permit from the local authorities. I haven't given up hope yet; my husband and I attended one previous DA event, where we were heckled by some Trumpian tourists. I've read On Tyranny and have started On Freedom, and I cite Tim Snyder often my substack, Stethoscope on Rome.
Thanks from We the Majority of People. WE are so sorry that trump got back into the White House. This is a disaster for America and the World! I have lost a lot of faith in the intelligence, morals and valueing of the informed voting for our government officials. I never will trust the basic smarts and morals of our voters again. Every election will be a battle of wills, battle of courts, battle against lies, propaganda. This is an huge challenge for us. We are working on it and picking up momentum, IMO.
The Majority of People indeed. The percentage of people who disapprove of Trump is outdone only by the percentage of people who dislike his individual poliicies, including especially now his war of choice on Iran.
Organize one yourself! If it's legal, just stand outside somewhere with your poster. Here in Germany one person alone does not need a permit. I organized a Tesla Takedown in Germany with just six family members at first, but we were seen and interacted with about 2,000 people. We were the top story on the local on-line news for a day. I also organized a Hands Off and a No Kings later. DA was not supporting these demonstrations then, but I'm glad to see they have come around and are doing "No Tyrants" (not to offend some member countries that have ceremonial kings). Send me a private message if you like and I could help.
It's a cute idea, but it would certainly be just my husband and myself. I was told that they tried hard to get some sort of permit in Rome but failed. Don't know whether a one-man demo is legal in Italy, but I doubt it.
You can be anywhere you want and if you have a sign oh well. I was in Rome 30 years ago, I love the place. Maybe they don’t want you standing in one place holding a sign, say in front of a bakery, but if you are walking along, what would be the problem with that?
That would work, but I can't see why caring a piece of foam board with No Kings on it would be illegal, as long as you don't park in front of a business where they might object. It may be illegal to sell things on the sidewalk, but walking on it is what they are made for. Be brave, our democracy matters, we have to act like it. We have freedom of speech, if they don't like what we have to say, then do things that we like.
Same here...I am planning to get my required annual minimum distributions out of my retirement account now - before they're devalued entirely - and distribute them to PBS, NPR and Ukraine. I'm hoping Professor Snyder will make a permanent list of donation sites for Ukraine or direct us to one that has tax status to quality for those distributions. Ukraine should really be a large part of these marches.
I am in Yolo County, CA. We organized a group, Yolo for Ukraine. We raise and donate money to Durham Humanitarian. They are small but mighty and work every day to bring aid to the people affected by the war. (I made a sunflower quilt that when all the tickets are sold will have raised over $2000. Over 400 of the 500 tickets have been sold. :-) )
I've explored Ukraine aid sites and I think any charitable donations to a foreign government are not deductible. Aid to the people of Ukraine may be. Not sure.
Wrong! United24 and RAZOM, to name but two, offer tax deductible mechanisms. If like me you're an old fart, you can make a QCD from your IRA and thereby reduce the amount of your Social Security benefit that is taxed. I am not a financial professional.
Bring a chair and a sign and your enthusiasm to the sidelines along the route of the march. We are always buoyed by another voice, another sign that there are more of us standing up for our CONSTITUTION than try to destroy it .
Write a couple quick sentences to your representatives every day. Copy-paste. Simply tell them what they should do (vote no/yes on a certain bill; stand up for/against something, etc.) Encourage those you agree with, too. It doesn't have to be a long essay!
Register your opinion. It does get counted. Federal, state, local --any and all levels help.
Ditto, in the winter months, below freezing, standing in the cold is very difficult for me. But, I have boycotted everything that in non-essential for months and months in trump 2.0 and often during trump 1.0 to hurt oligarchs, uber wealthy. I eliminate Target, Amazon-as much as possible, businesses with headquarters in Red States, donate to Planned Parenthood, some politicians, Habitat for Humanity etc., write to my all Democrat representatives in DC and to Dems in my state government. STAY INFORMED until I need to duck out. Be aware if I am submitting in advance to Fascists, autocratic pressures and RESIST, PROTEST and walk away from anyone trying to dominate, take my rights and freedoms away. Be willing to go to jail for refusing to ID myself, etc. Support those we feel are in the "Fight" for We the People, law/order and accountability.
One idea is to go outside or before an open window and bang on a metal pot with a large spoon. It's done in other countries to good effect. Coordinate with your neighbors as to a time and for how long.
Speaking of coordinating "with your neighbors," Stephen --
-- how about ordering three or four pizzas from a local pizza place, and asking a trusted neighbor to pick up, carry to a local protest, and pass out to others there?
I made a PEACE prayer flag with a poem underneath using the letters in the word, PEACE: “Protect All Children Every Eon.” When it rained the printer ink ran! I am making more prayer flags with real flag paint.
I donated to our Food Bank, and especially am taking food to a Free Fridge. I started sitting in at Quaker Meetings. I hope these few practices spark ideas for you!
I hope Saturdays protest will lead to more and more sustained protests and other actions to bring democracy back to America.
We will need millions around America during our Nov elections to stop voter suppression and ensure free elections.
We need protests at HHS while leadership ignores our building measeles epidemic.
No one, least of all Trump, knows what disasters he'll have unleashed in the Middle East. Everyone needs to recognize that $200 billion new funding for arms would pay for 2 years of ACA subsidies.
We MUST peacefully take our country back from the extreme right wing fascists.
White, Christian Nationalism has no place in American governance. We must stop Trump's police state. We must take off their masks
This is not Resistence. This is the Reclamation and Revival of our freedom and the rule of law.
I read a Substack telling people not to go to No Kings and it infuriated me. So I looked up the author and found the name of an interior designer in SF. Looking farther I found the website—all in Chinese or a similar language. We need to beware!
Thank you for this, and for stressing that acting together with others brings joy! We all spend so much time listening to the news and doom scrolling that we sometimes forget the power of connection and collective action. As dire as the world seems right now, we can bring change if we work together. Hold that thought.
I have been to most, if not all, of the previous major protests. I make signs that I carry and give to my friends. A useful service might be to curate a list of good sign texts. I noticed signs quoting you, like “Do not obey in advance,” are around. My most successful sign reads: “Remember Polio? I don’t.”
A brilliant scholar of mine believed, at least for most of his career, believed that protest DID NOT LEAD TO ACTIVISM.
It does: Your salutation to protest, Tim, reminds me of another world class brilliant scholar-writer like yourself, Judith Butler. Her "politics of 'Assembly' dovetails nicely with your political viewpoint...but in a post structural genre, much like France's Michel Foucault.
Thank you for leading the path; and paving the way to Freedom, relentlessly.
I know - bummer!!! My imaginary (at the moment!) human chain gangs will have to be able to materialize on very short notice. Like old-fashioned bucket brigades. Maybe we'll have to go back to old-timey clanger alarms! Like the "iron triangles" some of our grandmas used to call us in to dinner.
No Kings protests have jobs that do not require a lot of standing or marching. Contact your local Indivisible group and ask about jobs that can be done sitting down.
Don’t forget the children. Children are being held in concentration camps and denied freedom of expression in art, contact with families, lawyers, representatives, and activists.
Children trafficked, sexually abused, deported, denied medical care, clean drinking water and uncontaminated food. DO NOT FORGET THE CHILDREN.
Your books are "the grounding" for everyone involved in this Protest movement to save the Democracy we have been striving to improve for close to 250 years. These books are manuals for us all as we "fight on" to save ourselves and the country.. Thank you....more than you will ever know!

Not sure what his military advisors are saying.

It’s even worse than that: they’ve lifted the sanctions on Iranian oil (already at sea). No doubt because Trump is panicking over rising oil prices.
Genius move! /s
Republicans in Congress have adopted Trump’s attitude of “I don’t care (about any of you). They will continue on their
selfish path until they are voted out of office.

How about wearing pins? A friend of mine just told me she has one (from Mary Engelbreit) that says, "Seriously though, he is so stunningly stupid."
What matters is that you would, if you could! 👍💙

The last No Kings protest made Trump so mad he bulldozed the East Wing.
Stunts like that call for "human chains." Some linked arms might've saved the EW. Maybe even the Rose Garden!!! We need some chain gangs!
