Last night as I was reading "The Red Prince," I started to poke around looking for more source material on Wilhelm, and I stumbled upon this. It's in Russian, but I read it by putting it through google translate. Professor Snyder has no doubt seen these documents himself. There are photos, including a fingerprint and prison mugshots of Wilhelm, as well as photographs of printed documents, including "Vasily Vyshivany. The decision to clarify the surname. Photo from the case file" (captioned "Василий Вышиваный. Постановление об уточнении фамилии. Фото из материалов дела"). You can see his birth year (1895) written in a questionnaire captioned "Анкета Вильгельма Габсбурга-Лотрингена. Фото из материалов дела". There are also photographs of Roman Novosad (captioned under "Роман Новосад. Фото из материалов дела" and "Роман Новосад. Фото из удостоверения личности, 1946 год"). I thought I would share this with those who might be interested in primary documents on the subject. https://argumentua.com/stati/ertsgertsog-v-kievskoi-tyurme-delo-vasiliya-vyshivanogo-i-kgb

Thank you for a story that's both moving and revelatory. Here I sit, thinking over and over about a man born of nobility in Europe so long ago and how he decided to live his life. And I will not forget the lessons articulated in your last two paragraphs. If only all Americans would read and contemplate them in the context of a nation in peril.

A much more famous man of the 20th century also chose a nationality different from that of his birth. In his case, the German.
