I just donated, feeling it's one of the few things we can do to thwart The Bloated Yam. Thanks for the reminder as everyone should favor mine-detecting robots.

I really enjoyed this mini-lecture in real time. Impressive that you could give this in the midst of a subway. Very informative! Continue this format.

I have donated to Ryan Hendrickson’s Tip of the Spear land mine removal group and I just donated to this one as well. Ukraine has some of the most productive farm land in the world, but until it is safe for the farmers to return, it cannot be used. Slava Ukraini!

Thank you Dr. Snyder. I agree we have to help Ukraine and that in defeating Putin we are helping our selves AND democratic Europe. I trust Joe Biden to do the right thing for Ukraine. Since I'm now retired and on a limited fixed budget, I do what I can when I can.

Your site told me my card was invalid. It also said it did not accept "Apple Pay" even though this was one of the ways to contribute. (Sorry to put this in the Comment section.)

a non sequitur, but this email I just received and thought it instructive on American Fascism: From: Beverlybandler <bgb38@prodigy.net.mx> unfortunately the cartoons aren't copyable but her 20 characteristics of fascism are important.

Subject: Characteristics of a Fascist Political Party

Habituation, confusion, distraction, self-interest, fear, rationalization, and a sense of personal powerlessness makes terrible things possible.” - Cass R. Sunstein

It appears that most Americans still don’t get it: The 2024 election is about fascism versus democracy. Donald J. Trump is not simply an incoherent, vulgar buffoon. He is a fascist and “the most dangerous man on the planet.” Today’s “Republican Party” is not simply “a cult”, it has evolved into an extremist right-wing fascist movement and “the most dangerous organization in human history.”

20 Characteristics of a Fascist Political Party

Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism.

Disdain for the importance of human rights.

Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.

The supremacy of the military/avid militarism.

Rampant sexism.

A controlled mass media.

Obsession with national security.

Religion and ruling elite tied together.

Power of corporations protected.

Power of labor suppressed or eliminated.

Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts.

Obsession with crime and punishment.

Rampant cronyism and corruption.

Fraudulent elections.

Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism.

Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak.

For Ur-Fascism, disagreement is treason.

Ur-Fascism derives from individual or social frustration.

For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.

The Ur-Fascist leader presents himself as the heroic representative of the characteristics of fascism.

These characteristics are based on Britt’s 2003 analysis of seven fascist regimes. He found fourteen common characteristics, to which six by Umberto Eco have been added.

Characteristics of a Fascist Political Party. By Beverly Bandler, 2024-10-17.

Beverly Bandler’s public affairs career spans some 50 years. She served as the third president of the state-level League of Women Voters of the Virgin Islands and produced extensive public education efforts in the Washington, D.C. area for 16 years. Bandler attended Sarah Lawrence College (‘59) and has a master’s degree in Public Administration from George Washington University (‘82). Copyrighted material should be treated appropriately.

Professor Snyder, I continue to donate to the causes you recommend - thank you. Ben Wittes, Editor of Lawfare introduced me to an another worthwhile group I'm supporting - a group of young women journalists called Svidomi (conscience). At considerable effort and courage, they report on the war, on politics - both in Ukraine and in the U.S. - and how both affect people living in unimaginable conditions. Their website is published in English and Ukrainian. https://svidomi.in.ua/en.
