Good article. Women, black women especially, seem to corner the market on compassion, empathy and of course intuition.

Excellent essay again, Professor Snyder. I know this is off topic, but would you be so kind as to answer a simple question? Because I don't have a social media account, I can only read, but not respond to, your tweets. I'm watching your lecture about the five forms of freedom, and you mention something about Bakhtin on freedom. In one of your lectures on youtube several years ago, you said that Bakhtin said something like, The person who permits himself to be lied to has become a thing." Is this the Mikhail Bakhtin who wrote "Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics," or another Bakhtin? I've had the book for years but haven't gotten around to reading it. Could you provide me with the source of your comments? Thank you.
