I've been skeptical on the notion that "Trump is a Russian asset" or that "Putin has something on Trump", for a long time. Putin saw in Trump a useful idiot, one who would inflict more damage on the US than the Russian army ever could. No, the reality has been obvious for some time: Trump wants what Putin has, unchecked power at home and a modern military machine at his disposal to impose his will abroad. Trump's favorite adjective is "powerful" and he sees himself and Putin as two powerful world figures playing their domination games. If Putin loses in Ukraine it might be taken as an object lesson for the US in, say, Venezuela. The third interested party is Xi, who surely must think that conditions are ripening for taking Taiwan. So much Winning!

The underdog is highly archetypal, too, reflecting our desire to persevere in an indifferent, oftentimes hostile universe. This is most often found in sporting contests, but statistically, the favorite usually wins.

If the US had sent useful war materiel, near the beginning, with longer ranges, this conflict might look very different. Perhaps it's not too late.
