For No Kings Day, we’d hate for the fascists to mistake us as unAmerican ANTIFA. Therefore, everyone needs to bring an American flag and waive it all day long.

Let them claim we hate America, or love Hamas and Hezbollah, or shoot tear gas or rubber bullets at actual peace and freedom loving Americans. I dare them! There is nothing more American than exercising our First Amendment rights.

The irony is that it’s this American Taliban who are telling the world that we love Hamas and that we are the terrorists. These people truly lack any semblance of self-awareness! IMHO…:)

As peaceful protesters we need to clearly refute the fascist propaganda by declaring that we are ANTI FAscists whenever the opportunity presents itself. We need to absorb the material on the antifascists of the Weimar Republic from Dr Snyder's previous video so we can confront the MAGAts with facts.

Robert Jaffee's avatar

Agreed, but we can help make our case by high jacking their talking points. It’s hard to shoot protestors waiving the American flag. Instead of burning it and giving them ammunition to use against us, let’s use their talking points against them.

There’s nothing more American than protesting and exercising our first amendment rights. And carrying the flag and making our voices heard, should be our weapons of choice. IMHO…:)

Adding a big red heart along with the flag to my No Kings sign. ❤️🇺🇸

I’ve been waving a large Stars and Stripes at more than 30 protests since March, and am thanked every time by my fellow protesters who often have clever and poignant signs. At our last NoKings small flags were abundant, and my local Indivisible chapter was handing them out. My dad was an anti-Vietnam War organizer (and WW2 vet) and he would say “Don’t let the bastards steal the flag.” (In reference to the flag pins in the Nixon White House, in particular). If thongs go too far, I will fly it upside down, but not yet.

Love the flag idea!

When my Union would picket we always had Observers with video cameras. Today almost all of us are carrying video recorders. If you see masked, armed people or masked people in all black, start recording. About every two minutes, stop and start recording so your videos will upload (have automatic cloud storage ready).

We have already seen masked and armed federal agents trying to start riots and generating video for MAGA media. It is very possible that 18 October will see a false flag operation of MAGA dressing as “Antifa” to start a riot.

Stay calm. Don’t take the bait. Record, record, RECORD!!

Agreed, and well said!…:)

Transcript, anybody?

This is Tim Snyder. It's October 11th. The big No Kings rally is in a week on October 18th. I want to encourage you to join me. I'll be at one of them, and I hope many millions of you will be at others. I'm speaking today because I want to talk about propaganda.

Mr. Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, referred to the No Kings rallies as Hate America. He said... We've got a theory. And then he went on to say that these rallies must be about hating America. When he says theory, what he means is they've gotten together and they've assembled for themselves a propaganda line.

They've assembled for themselves some message discipline. They're not going to use the words no kings because using those words would make it clear that that these rallies are about what America has always supposed to be. It's always supposed to have been against kings, against tyranny, against unfreedom. And it is wrong to lie.

It's wrong for the Speaker of the House of Representatives to lie. It's wrong to come up with a coordinated campaign to lie. It's a violation of the Ninth Commandment, but it's also just simple indecency. But the thing that I want to say more positively is this. It's work to organize.

The people organizing the No Kings rallies are doing work, getting thousands of sites ready, preparing for millions of people to protest peacefully. That's work. Now, it may be the kind of work that somebody sitting in a safe district in Louisiana and taking money from donors doesn't understand. But the essence of democracy is not

safe districts and taking money from donors and putting on ties and doing what they tell you to do. The essence of democracy and freedom is being unpredictable. It's caring about your rights and the rights of others. It's caring about the republic as a whole. It's the willingness to take some kind of action.

So as for me, I'm very grateful to the people who are organizing the No Kings rallies. I'm very grateful to all of you who are going to come on October the 18th because this is all about the positive. Being against kings is about being for freedom. And it's about loving America because loving your country is

means wanting it to be the best version of what it can be, not the worst. Loving your country means showing up. Loving your country means caring about it. Loving your country means being with other people. And that's what I'm looking forward to doing.

And I hope I'll see lots and lots of the rest of you out there too. October 18th, below this video, you'll see a button where you can find out where you can show up. Thank you very much. Thanks for being with me.

With you YES!!!!! Always please give a full transcript of your podcast!! Some of us are not blessed with good hearing and must read it! Do not omit us!! Do not omit anyone!!! Thanks!!

Karen Lewton's avatar

I will always copy the transcripts into the comments Emmy, as soon as I can. I realise that the transcript, which is always there with the video, isn't accessible to all devices. It's a fault with the Substack setup, not an oversight by Timothy Snyder. I'm a teacher of hearing impaired children so I do get what you say!

Thank you for pointing out that the self-described Christian Speaker of the House Mike Johnson routinely violates the 9th commandment against bearing false witness. Rather than a faithful witness, he demonstrates a false witness every day. He has silenced the House in the midst of a government shutdown, all the while lying about the reasons for that as well as the motives of those of us who oppose him. He should be called the Deceiver of the House. We must be more disciplined in our protest, speaking truth to power, in this case, to powerful people who seem unacquainted with truth.

Thank you! I was scheduled for heart surgery this past week, and was very sad that I probably wouldn’t be able to show up on Oct 18. My surgery was moved to November, so I’m thrilled that I can now attend. Thank you, as always, for your wise words.

Lourine C's avatar

Susan with all on your mind that preparing for a surgery I am so touched that you were happy for the delay so you can join us at this protest! And I shall for one shall pray for this to be a most successful surgery and incredibly smooth recovery on Nov 1 - as well as today. Bless you my friend … (Psalm 3:3-5; Psalm 5:11-12)

Susan McDonald's avatar

Thank you, Lorine. That is very kind of you. The surgery is a scary prospect, but I have faith it will be fine. It was just very important to me to be able to attend a protest; one of the few ways we have to push back.

Flags are a great idea. Thanks.

I'll be out with my co-citizens here in Venice, Florida making it clear I have no intention of becoming a subject. We can't lose if we refuse to quit.

Mike Hammer's avatar

MAGA says freedom but they mean the other thing. We all need to show up.

Some people with young families who were directly threatened are good to go to Canada. This note isn’t meant as a judgement on those who have gone to Canada or Spain or wherever they feel safe. The rest of us, like me — I’ve been demonstrating my love for my country since the March on Washington in 1963 — like you, like so many people, need to come out next week on the 18th. There are over 2000 separate demonstrations. There is sure to be one near you. Bring your flag and stand with us, sing with us, laugh with us, this is going to be fun! We may not have Martin any more to lift our souls, but we have each other to laugh with! Wave that flag! Thanks, Prof. Snyder, for this post. Be safe.

I'll be at one of these rallies.

I live in the mountains of Kyushu, Japan -- but will be visiting my son in Sebastopol, California. Don't know if our rally will be in that town, or in nearby Petaluma, Santa Rosa, or San Francisco.

Martha's avatar

It means so much to so many of us that other nations are watching; that they understand the danger we are in and are willing to lend their support in whatever way they can.

Phil Balla's avatar

We need to change the schools, Martha.

I've seen close-up in Japan how the U.S. export of standardized testing has killed teaching, first in the U.S., then around the world.

I'd seen this first in central Europe, where I taught 30-40 years ago (in Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic (1987 to 1998).

If teachers have the freedom to assign whole books they love, schools will be fine. But testing kills this freedom.

Potter's avatar

Wow-- we went there a few years ago! lucky you!! Tell us about where you live.

Phil Balla's avatar

I'm about in the middle of Kyushu, Potter.

On the train line from Oita on the Pacific coast to the east of us, to Kumamoto, west.

We're in a valley surrounded by three mountains, each a mile-high. Two rivers course our valley, and a very old former castle has its grounds and many stone foundations remaining immediately adjacent, east -- marvelously beautiful views everywhere up there.

Many families move here from Japan's bigger cities. I teach English at my home -- our home, with my wife, who was born and raised here, but left, first to school in Tokyo, then abroad -- many years in many parts of the U.S.

Great people. Great kids.

Also abundant in shiitake mushrooms, kabosu (like U.S. green limes), peaches, tomatoes, sweet corn, and saffron. And rice terraced on all the hills.

Very lucky indeed, Potter. But I'll return to the damages I've seen here from that noxious U.S. for-profit (mega profit) export: testing.

Am soon offline for the next ten days.

Potter's avatar

We had such a wonderful time in Japan, especially Kyushu, Kumamoto and other places there. We had a guide. I am a potter so this was my main interest and of course the art and the gardens, the architecture, temples.. Traveling around, we loved the people, the feeling of the country, of course the food. Matcha tea everyday for me here… Thank you for this personal comment and evoking my own memories. ( I assume you speak Japanese!) Best Wishes

Tim

Great short message--as you always do.

But you were wearing an LL Bean vest with label showing. I have not bought anything from

LL Bean since learning about 7 years ago that a Bean heiress donated Millions of dollars to

Trump which helped him to get started.

gerri caldarola's avatar

And, why isn't Mike Johnson et al anti-fascist (antifa)? Why aren't they?

Stephen Schiff's avatar

Because it would make them be against themselves

gerri caldarola's avatar

You hit the nail on the head; but, i would still love to hear their answer.

Susan Y's avatar

Thanks Tim. Going to share this far and wide.

Martha's avatar

I appreciate your encouragement. Every time there is a protest, I make signs (I actually study the psychology of messaging - occupational hazard) and recruit as many friends as possible. While there are a few detractors, most passersby are enthusiastic and supportive. Given what is happening now, I find that many of us are more on edge. But it’s important that we don’t give in to fear (which is what they want us to do), but that we stand up and let the nation know that we love our country and constitution.

Kelly's avatar

Thank you for speaking about No Kings. I joined and ended up on the leadership team of our local Indivisible chapter. We are having a No Kings rally on the 18th. Like you said, we are all out there doing this because we love our country. This is one of the only ways I can fight back against Trump's authoritarian takeover. No Kings is only one action - there will be more peaceful protests and actions. Trump is trying to shut down groups like Indivisible, which means that what we are doing is working. We will keep fighting for our democracy.

General Eisenhower, General Bradley and General MacArthur (despite his issues) were Antifa.
